| Don S. Davis ~ Interviews |
Q. 9. In your interview with Cover Zone, you mentioned that Kim Shattuck’s character gets the main character, Julian, to slash his hand and give her an autograph in blood. Did you pull this experience or any other experience from the actors' real lives? It would sound cool if I told you I did. But no, the scenes were all written before I met either Kim or Don. |
|
Kim told me that story after I had hired her. I thought it was a pretty amazing coincidence and I guess it just is. I think Don has had some issues with Gallery owners but again, no, the screenplay was written before Don came into the project. The film is pretty much the script verbatim, with the exceptions being the cut scenes (Kim's slashing hand scene was cut =( in the final edit).

There is a montage scene of art buyers that is pretty much ad lib. I just gave the actors suggestions and directions and they had fun. Those scenes are really funny! There is only one scene I can think of where I made stuff up. Robert Miano started his career as a singer, he told me, so I wrote a couple lines into the film where Robert asks Louise Post (Veruca Salt) what she does and she says she's a singer. Robert has a big grin in that scene. I thought it would be cool for him, so I added the lines. But these were written before shooting as well. |

| Q. 10 On the Albion Entertainment forum, you described Don's character as "Don playing ultimate evil. He manipulates the main character by creating an artistic scheme to help line his pockets. And if it is at the cost of the main character...do you think he'd continue? You bet!" Can you give us any more tidbits? For example, does he have ANY redeemable characteristics? | |
More than being greedy, Don's character is bitter. Even though Don's character is a horrible man, I feel very sorry for him. I think that if you think about each character in the film you'll feel sorry for each of them. I think that is what makes you care about them. |
|
| Q. 11 So, in closing, is an artist's art really worth the reward? | |
Right to the point, huh. The answer is YES. But only if an actor stays true to him or herself. Do what you want to do because it is what you should do, not for anyone or anything else, but yourself. |

| Interview with Joel Miller ~ The Still Life |
Don Davis & Robert Miano |
The Still Life will be submitted to Sundance in September 2005. Just a reminder, The Still Life will be showing at select theaters next year. You can also put The Still Life on your Netflix queue here. |
Don models his hat. As you can see, even though his character is not evil, merely misunderstood, he does have a kicking wardrobe! |
